Home Story Library The Man Behind the Tocqueville Name

In the 1830s, a Frenchman named Alexis de Tocqueville journeyed across America, seeking the heart of its democratic spirit. He was deeply impressed by something fundamental: Americans’ remarkable ability to come together voluntarily to address community needs. He admired the uniquely American spirit of neighbors helping neighbors, working together to solve problems and build a better future.
It is this very spirit of community engagement, generosity, and voluntary action – so admired by Tocqueville – that United Way formed the Tocqueville Society in 1984. It now has over 400 chapters globally, with nearly 25,000 members donating over a half-of-billion dollars annually.
