Empower local kids by supporting the United Way School Supply Drive this August.
Before a child ever steps into the classroom, their school year has already begun.
It begins in living rooms where parents review supply lists, planning out future shopping trips. It begins in closets, where children carefully select the perfect first-day outfit to fit in with their peers. It begins in stores, where children pick out folders and backpacks, imagining what exciting things the year ahead may hold. And for too many local families, it begins with difficult decisions about what they can afford for their children – and what they may have to do without this school year.
Throughout Cass and Clay counties, 1 in 4 families are working hard to keep up with the rising costs of everyday expenses, and back-to-school shopping means making difficult financial choices between supplies and other basic needs.
It’s easy to think of a backpack simply as a place to hold notebooks, folders, and pencils. But for many children, it represents something much bigger.
It represents confidence.
It represents belonging.
It represents walking into the classroom feeling prepared, instead of worrying about what they don’t have.
At United Way, we believe every child’s future should be defined by possibility, not circumstance.
That’s why, for 27 years, our community has come together through the United Way School Supply Drive to help local students start their school year confident and ready to succeed. More than 110,000 backpacks have been distributed because thousands of neighbors, businesses, and volunteers have joined us in the belief that no child should start the school year behind simply because of financial circumstances.
