“When I first came here, I was really scared. Maddie gives me the courage to want to do better.”
-Kylie, teenager at Car Ben Eielson Middle School, Fargo

After struggling with homelessness and spending most of her life without a positive mentor, Kylie often felt overwhelmed and hopeless. After meeting her School Case Manager, Maddie, at Carl Ben Eielson Middle School in Fargo, Kylie started to re-engage in school and see a more hopeful future for herself. Thanks to help and support provided by United Way, she is working on her relationships with her family and positive ways to express her feelings. She is beginning to see her strength, worth, and potential.

“She’s just a kid that wants to do well. She just needs an extra support somebody to stand side by side her and help her get her to her goals. Kylie and I have some really hard days together, whether that’s home or school when I’m with her in the crisis. We have built that trust because I stand with her, not only in the good times, but in the bad times.”

We believe kids like Kylie deserve opportunities to reach their full potential. Poverty is probably more common than you imagine.
In fact, right here in our community, 1 in 7 children live in poverty. If an average classroom has approximately 20-30 kids, that’s 3-4 kids per classroom who may be struggling with basic needs like food, a safe place to live, and support at home.
By investing and working together to improve the lives and futures of local kids – we all succeed.
